Stockwell, a deprived neighbourhood in south London, has some of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the UK.
‘Our Stockwell’ was a place-based design research project I led, working with the community intensively over ten months to design and test localised solutions to address the issue of childhood obesity.
While most initiatives to tackle childhood obesity focus on diet, ‘Our Stockwell’ took a more holistic approach: focusing on how the built environment can affect positive changes in people’s daily life and improve their wellbeing.
The project closely involved local parents, children and young people in a co-design process to find place-specific interventions that addressed local barriers and challenged perceptions to promote a healthier lifestyle.
