6-month artist residency at ZK/U. GUrL’s purpose is to better involve young people in the planning of their cities, with a particular focus on teenage girls and other marginalised genders who often feel most excluded from city spaces. The piece follows a group of teenagers who met regularly to dance at the foot of the TV Tower in Alexanderplatz, Berlin. I was moved to discover a self-organised group of mostly teenage girls and young people of marginalised gender identities taking over a public space in this way. Working with them over the course of six months, I realised there was more to the story. The text overlaid in these stills show quotes from the dancers, recorded through interviews. While most initiatives to tackle childhood obesity focus on diet, ‘Our Stockwell’ took a more holistic approach: focusing on how the built environment can affect positive changes in people’s daily life and improve their wellbeing. This performance through the neighbourhood of Moabit, followed a day-long workshop at ZK/U with teenage girls from the local youth club ‘Mädchen-Kultur-Treff Dünja’. We used props, sounds and actions to explore how we can we collectively take up space in our neighbourhood. The props and their content were made by the girls, who chose to represent Palestine and K-pop in the work. The performance included music and spoken word, and was joined by members of the public at points including a Palestinian immigrant from the neighbourhood who was very moved by our actions. Stills taken from a short film piece made with teenage girls from the local youth club ‘Mädchen-Kultur-Treff Dünja’. This film was directed and shot by the girls following a workshop into film-making that took place in the local public space within Otto Park. Part of the film shows an interview between the girls, discussing spaces in their neighbourhood. Other parts document how we collectively claimed space in the park to just “be”. This spontaneously turned into a Karaoke session, as the girls developed the confidence to express themselves in public space. These images show the maps made in collaboration with two groups of teenagers, in Alexanderplatz and Moabit. They formed the first workshop to get to know them and the area from their perspective, and uncover curious stories and personal anecdotes. Emojis became a universal language to express emotion about different spaces in these areas. The mapping process included recording the neighbourhood from all senses, collecting sounds, textures, photographs,objects, smells and flavours. Photographs from three public exhibitions at ZK/U held within the residency studio spaces. These exhibitions included installation showing two films ‘Otto Park’ and ‘Free Palestine Free K-Pop’ projected simultaneously on opposite walls.
